"Reverse Perimetral Painting"
I am the author and originator of an artistic principle in which the traditional logic of painting is deliberately inverted. Date of first public fixation of the concept and works: [24 o February 2026] Author: Vardan Zadoyan.
- The conceptWithin this concept, the center of the artwork is deprived of imagery and replaced by a solid material object, while the act of painting is transferred onto the frame, which becomes the primary carrier of meaning.
- The MethodThis method rethinks the nature of visual perception itself, demonstrating that interpretation is always shaped through frames — cultural, psychological, and ideological.
- For the First timeFor the first time in the context of contemporary visual art:
• the frame is used not as a secondary or decorative element, but as a full-fledged canvas;
• the central space of the artwork is intentionally blocked by a physical material;
• meaning is constructed not within the image, but along its boundary. - Artistic ApproachThis artistic approach is not a variation of minimalism, conceptual art, or object-based practices, but represents an independent authorial system, built on a deliberate shift in hierarchy between content, form, and context.
Reverse Painting, also referred to as Perimetral Painting, is an authorial artistic concept introduced by Armenian artist and screenwriter Vardan Zadoyan in 2026.
The core principle of the concept consists of relocating the painted image from the central canvas to the frame, while the central area of the artwork is replaced with a solid material object, most commonly a wooden block without imagery.
Within this approach:
• the frame functions as the primary canvas;
• the central space is deliberately deprived of visual narrative;
• the viewer’s attention is shifted from the image itself to its boundary and contextual limits.
The concept treats the frame as an active meaning-forming element and interprets the empty or material-filled center not as an absence, but as a conscious artistic restriction.
